Project Overview

The £32m King’s Dyke level crossing scheme is being delivered by Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK for Cambridgeshire County Council.

The project aims to address traffic delays caused by the current railway line crossing in Peterborough, a problem which has been the subject of a campaign going back 20 years.

Jones Bros will construct a new road and bridge and remove the level crossing which will unlock opportunity for the north of the county and bring investment, jobs and homes.

Supply Chain Spotlight

Jones Bros is working hard to engage local suppliers as well as providing employment opportunities, including apprenticeships, for people living in Cambridgeshire.

Examples include milk deliveries from Peterborough Dairies as well as a nearby tuck van supplying food and drink to employees on site.

Whittlesey-based PJ Thory has also supplied aggregate materials for the project.

Careers Insight

There are a variety of career paths you can go down with civil engineering, from site engineer and management to working on the ground and driving items of plant. At King’s Dyke, we have many plant operators, but we also have office and site-based roles which look at the technical side of the project.

With so many different aspects involved in a civil engineering scheme, it’s definitely an interesting and varied career choice.

The Bridge Structure

The bridge, which is to go over the Ely to Peterborough railway line, is comprised of six columns and six beams. Jones Bros will be bringing in a one thousand tonne crane to lift those beams into place.

One of the first steps the civil engineering firm carried out was monitoring the railway track to ensure there is no disruption.

By summer 2021, Jones Bros will be starting work on the bridge deck.
